The Best Candle Scents for Autumn (and How to Use Them)

As the evenings draw in, most of us want our homes to smell different. The bright citrus and fresh linen scents that worked in July start to feel thin against a grey October afternoon. Autumn calls for something with more depth: resin, dark fruit, wood and a little warmth.

Here are the scents we reach for once the heating goes on, all hand-poured in small batches in our Oxford workshop.

1. Amber – warm, resinous and quietly sweet

If you only choose one autumn candle, make it an amber. Ours pairs amber and white musk with vanilla bean, then grounds it with patchouli, sandalwood and labdanum so it never tips into sugary. It burns as a steady, enveloping warmth: ideal for living rooms and bedrooms on long evenings.

2. Bramble – blackberry, bay and rosemary

Bramble is autumn hedgerow in a jar. Dark blackberry sits alongside aromatic bay and rosemary, finished with dry cedarwood. It is fruity without being sweet, with a herbal freshness that works well in kitchens and hallways as well as in the evening.

3. Rosa Noire – a darker kind of rose

Forget powdery summer florals. Rosa Noire is a deep rose wrapped in sandalwood and labdanum, rich and slightly smoky. It suits dimly lit rooms, dinner parties and anyone who thinks they don't like floral candles.

4. Grenade Noire – black pomegranate and labdanum

Our most dramatic scent. Black pomegranate brings a juicy, dark-fruit opening, while labdanum and patchouli give it a resinous, woody base. It fills a room without shouting and is at its best after dark.

How to layer autumn scents around your home

A candle gives you intensity for an evening; a reed diffuser gives you a constant background scent for weeks. For a home that smells considered rather than overpowering:

  • Hallway: a reed diffuser in Bramble or Amber sets the tone the moment you walk in.
  • Living room: light a candle in the evening. Amber or Grenade Noire work well for long, slow nights in.
  • Bedroom: a few sprays of room spray before bed gives scent without an open flame.

Keeping to one or two scent families (warm and resinous, or dark fruit) stops rooms competing with each other.

Getting the best burn from your candle

  • First burn: let the wax melt to the edges of the glass before blowing it out. This prevents tunnelling for the rest of the candle's life.
  • Trim the wick to around 5mm before each burn for a clean, steady flame.
  • Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time, and never leave a lit candle unattended.

Each of our 160g candles gives around 35–40 hours of burn time, and every batch is cured before it leaves the workshop so the scent is fully developed when you light it.
